Ecological Land Care Videos – Our Urban Homestead Project

Ecological Land Care Videos – I have created the following videos and tutorials for my YouTube channel. Here’s the link. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW26Ntwjjhi9vtOSORndUaQ

The first hexagon raised bed I ever built. 30 and 60 degree angles are the secret. It is large because it will be the center garden in a series of gardens in a food forest area. The first part of a much larger project.

This is a sneak peek into what our urban homestead looked like at the beginning of the second summer.

I use Neem Oil as a pest control method. It is as harsh as my arsenal gets because it kills most every insect.

This is my attempt at a wood fired kiln for my pottery experiment. Which went well, but my little stove won’t get hot enough.

If you are wondering about composting in the winter months, or just looking for indoor composting ideas. Here are 5 that we use.

Wicking beds are a great addition to any urban garden. Here are the latest ones I built that are piped together. They will be completed (hooked into the down spouts) in 2023.

Oyster -shell Scale under the microscope

These are just cool videos I took with my microscope. Oyster shell scale is what is killing the Cotoneasters in Calgary. No big loss I realize, but the dead hedges look horrible.

Worm Composting – Indoor Vermicomposting Bins

Some instructional videos on how we compost with worms. There are a few different methods that work, so I highlighted the ones we use.

Sometimes the worm compost can get a little too wet. Here is a video showing how I deal with that. I do not put drainage hole in my composters. I always find they dry out more than they get too wet.

Now to take the worm leachate, aka pee, and turn it into aerated compost tea for the house plants.

A “worm trap” is a great method for harvesting compost without picking each individual worm out of the compost. It takes a little time and to reset the trap a couple of times, but it makes harvesting much less messy and dangerous for the worms.

This is probably one of my favorite videos I have taken, because it is a worm INSIDE AN EGG!! So cool.

I am going to add more videos to the website, but Until then check out the YouTube channel (link above) for all the videos I post. The latest endeavor is a chicken coop and henhouse build. To be completed in 2023 also. So check it out.
